Burlesque Brings Out Body Confidence
Valkyries of the Valley are Empowering Performers in the Area
BY ROBYN ROHDE and EMMA VATNSDAL
To many people, the thought of a burlesque show evokes images of poles, creepy men and women prancing around in their undies.
Valkyries of the Valley, the Fargo area’s newest burlesque troupe, is trying to change the perception of burlesque by showing that being size zero isn’t the only way to be sexy.
Burlesque is a humorous and provocative stage show that combines laughter and music, with stripteases and empowered women. In the Valkyries of the Valley’s case, burlesque means less about arousing pleasure and more about showing the world comfort and confidence in the skin they were born in.
Another member of the troupe, Holly Handful, snuck into her first burlesque show when she was only 13. Struck by the glamour and confidence of the women performing, burlesque intrigued her from the start. Saying her stage name alludes directly to her personality, Holly Handful relates to audiences through humor and crowd interaction.
Along with the fun Holly Handful brings to the stage, there is one thing that stands out from the rest: she is a normal woman. Becoming Holly Handful brings forth a confident woman who loves what she does.
The troupe’s performances are not exclusive to the members of the Valkyries. The camaraderie created through these performers encourages others to join in on the fun. Special guests regularly make appearances. Enter drag queen Tequila Mockingbird.
Doing what they love to do and bringing out positivity is exactly what the Valkyries of the Valley set out to do. With more shows coming up in March, the area’s newest burlesque troupe is making their way in the community. Not only within the Fargo-Moorhead area, but changing hearts and minds as well.
